Engine Hoist Buying Guide
Removing and replacing an engine is one of the most rewarding jobs in home mechanics — and one of the most dangerous without the right equipment. An engine hoist (cherry picker) is not optional for this job. Here's how to choose the right one.
Capacity: Always Go Higher Than the Engine Weight
Most car engines weigh between 100kg (small 4-cylinder) and 350kg (large V8 or diesel). Gearboxes attached add another 30–80kg. Standard advice: choose a hoist rated at at least twice the combined engine and gearbox weight.
- Small 4-cylinder engine: 1-tonne hoist minimum
- 6-cylinder / large 4-cylinder: 1–2 tonne hoist
- V8, diesel or with gearbox attached: 2-tonne hoist
Boom Reach and Positions
Most hoists offer 3–4 boom extension positions that trade reach for rated capacity. At maximum extension (useful for reaching far into an engine bay), capacity reduces significantly — sometimes to 50% of full rated capacity. Check that your engine weight fits within the rated capacity at the extension you actually need.
Folding Design
A folding hoist stores flat — critical if your workshop space is limited. Check the folded dimensions against your storage space. A 2-tonne hoist folds to approximately 500 × 700 × 200mm in most designs.
Quality Indicators
- Hydraulic cylinder with internal lowering valve — smooth, controlled lowering
- Swivel castors with locking wheels — prevents movement during lifting
- Welded main frame (not bolted) for the primary load-bearing members
- CE marking (required for sale in Europe)
Essential Accessories
An engine hoist alone isn't enough. You'll also need:
- Engine leveller (tilts the engine to extract and reinsert at angles)
- Load chains rated to match your hoist capacity
- Engine stand for storage/work once the engine is out

Can I use an engine hoist for other jobs?
Yes — anywhere you need to lift heavy objects: gearboxes, fuel tanks, heavy workshop equipment, moving machinery. A 2-tonne hoist is extremely versatile.
How much space do I need to use an engine hoist?
You need the car length plus about 1.5m at the front for the hoist legs to straddle the front of the vehicle. Minimum practical garage width: 4.5m.
