Clearing Gutters with a Leaf Blower
Clogged gutters cause damp walls, foundation erosion and roof damage. Clearing them doesn't have to mean multiple trips up a ladder. With a purpose-made gutter attachment, most gutters can be cleared efficiently from the ground.
The Right Attachment
A gutter cleaning kit typically consists of 3–4 tube extensions (each 60–120 cm) that extend the blower's reach, plus a curved end piece that directs airflow into the gutter channel. Most quality kits are universal-fit and work with any round or oval blower nozzle.
For single-storey gutters at 3–4 metres: a 3-section kit is usually sufficient. For two-storey gutters at 5–7 metres: you'll need a 4–5 section kit or a dedicated long-reach gutter attachment.
Step-by-Step Technique
- Check wind direction — work so debris blows away from windows and doors
- Start at the downpipe end of each gutter run (so debris blows toward the downpipe, not away from it)
- Insert the curved nozzle over the gutter lip and walk slowly along the fascia
- For wet or compacted debris, make two passes: first a light pass to loosen, then full power to clear
- Check the downpipe — push a garden hose up from below to ensure it isn't blocked
Safety First
Even with a ground-level gutter kit, do not stand directly below the gutter during clearing — debris and stagnant water will fall. Wear safety glasses and a dust mask. Move back 2–3 metres and angle the tube to work from a distance.
Wet Gutters: Adjust Your Approach
Wet, compacted leaf debris in gutters is much harder to move than dry leaves. In this case, use a blower-vacuum in vacuum mode from a stepladder, or a wet/dry gutter vacuum specifically designed for this task. A leaf blower alone won't shift saturated sludge — only dry or lightly damp debris.
How Often to Clean Gutters
Once per year (late autumn, after leaves have finished falling) is the minimum. Properties under large deciduous trees may need clearing twice: mid-autumn and late autumn. Block downpipes cause overflow, which saturates fascia boards and eventually leads to rot.
