Hydraulic Jack Maintenance Guide
Hydraulic floor jacks and bottle jacks are robust tools but they're not maintenance-free. Neglect leads to fluid leaks, slow or incomplete lifting, or sudden pressure loss under load. Follow this guide to keep your jack reliable for decades.
Signs Your Jack Needs Attention
- Jack slowly sinks under load (most common — seal wear or air in system)
- Jack won't lift to full height
- Release valve leaks — vehicle lowers without touching the valve
- Oil puddles under the jack
- Stiff, jerky lifting action
Topping Up Hydraulic Oil
Hydraulic jacks use a specific hydraulic oil (ISO 32 or AW 32/46 grade — check your manual). Never use engine oil, brake fluid or ATF — these damage seals.
- Fully retract the jack ram
- Remove the oil fill plug (small rubber plug or brass screw, usually near the cylinder)
- Fill until oil reaches the base of the fill hole
- Replace plug
- Cycle the jack fully up and down 3 times to bleed air
Bleeding Air from the System
Air in the hydraulic system causes spongy, slow lifting. To bleed:
- Open the release valve fully
- Pump the jack handle 10 times with no load
- Close the release valve
- Pump again, checking full lift height is reached
- Repeat if necessary
Seal Replacement
If your jack leaks from the ram, the piston seal is worn. Seal kits are available for most jack models. Replacement requires disassembling the cylinder — feasible for an experienced home mechanic but requires care and cleanliness.
Storage
Store jacks fully retracted. Leaving the ram extended allows the exposed piston rod to corrode, damaging seals on retraction. Apply a light film of oil or anti-rust spray to the ram before long-term storage.

How often should I change jack hydraulic oil?
In normal home use: every 2–3 years or if the oil appears dark, foamy or milky. Milky oil means water contamination — change immediately.
