More people are injured or killed working on roofs than any other residential height task. The combination of height, slope and often-wet surfaces creates a uniquely hazardous environment. Using the right equipment is not optional.

Step 1 — Access Ladder to the Eaves

You first need a leaning ladder (extension or telescopic) to reach the gutter or eaves. This ladder should:

  • Be at least 1m taller than the eaves height so you can step onto the roof safely
  • Have a stabiliser/stand-off attachment — do not lean it on the guttering
  • Be footed by a colleague or tied off at the top

Step 2 — Roof Ladder for Pitches Above 12°

A roof ladder (cat ladder) hooks over the ridge tile and is used to walk up the slope. It distributes your weight along a wider surface area than boots alone, preventing tile breakage and slipping. This is essential for any task higher than the eaves on a pitched roof.

Roof Ladder Features to Look For

  • Padded wheels that roll up the roof without cracking tiles
  • Solid steel ridge hook (welded, not bolted)
  • Anti-slip rungs (aluminium with rubber inserts minimum)
  • Length: minimum the full roof slope length, ideally longer

Harness and Fall Arrest

For any professional working on a roof, a fall arrest harness anchored to the ridge is legally required in EU workplaces. For homeowners doing DIY roofwork: a harness is not legally required but strongly advised for any pitch above 20°.

FAQ

Can I use a normal ladder on a roof?

Only to reach the eaves. Never use a standard ladder on a pitched roof surface — it will slide. A purpose-made roof ladder is the only safe option for working above the eaves.
