Welfare Requirements on Construction Sites
Under EU Directive 92/57/EEC (implemented in Spain through RD 1627/1997), construction sites above certain size thresholds must provide specific welfare facilities including shelter from weather during rest breaks. A properly anchored heavy-duty canopy meets this requirement at a fraction of the cost of a hired welfare unit.
What a Site Welfare Canopy Needs to Provide
- Overhead weather protection (rated for local rainfall conditions)
- Protection from direct sun in summer (UV-resistant cover — check UPF rating)
- Space for workers to sit and eat — minimum 1m² per person, for up to 10 workers simultaneously
- Ventilation — must not create a CO or fume hazard if near equipment
A 3×6m or 4×4m canopy with full side walls meets these requirements comfortably for a crew of 8–12.
Site Canopy Specification
Must have: steel or aluminium commercial-grade frame, 600D+ PVC-coated cover, minimum 2m eave height (allows standing), side walls, wind resistance rating to Beaufort 6+, proper ground anchoring system.
Nice to have: integrated guttering, side window panels for light and visibility, tool/PPE storage rail on inner frame.
Siting the Welfare Canopy
Place away from active work zones (falling material risk). Position so the prevailing wind hits the back wall, not a side opening. Ensure clear pedestrian access from the main site without crossing vehicle routes. Keep clear of generators, compressors and diesel equipment that produce CO — minimum 6 metres separation.
Cold Weather Addition: Space Heaters
In winter, a welfare canopy without heat is barely better than nothing. Propane infrared heaters provide safe, efficient heating in open-sided shelters. Never use petrol or diesel space heaters in an enclosed or semi-enclosed canopy — risk of CO accumulation is severe. Infrared models radiate heat to objects and people without heating the surrounding air, making them much more efficient in a drafty canopy environment.
FAQ
Can the same canopy be used as a tool storage area at night?
Yes — adding lockable side walls and a secure closure allows the welfare canopy to double as a tool store when not in use during the day. This eliminates the need for a separate storage unit on many smaller sites.
