How to Clean and Store a Canopy: Preventing Mould and Damage

The Biggest Canopy Mistake: Packing Damp

Pack a damp canopy into its carry bag and leave it for a week. You'll open a bag of mould. The mould doesn't just look bad — it degrades the waterproof coating and weakens fabric fibres. Once mould has penetrated the coating, it's very difficult to fully remove. Prevention is everything.

Cleaning the Canopy Fabric

  1. Set up the canopy or lay the roof panel flat on a clean surface
  2. Rinse with clean water from a hose
  3. For stubborn dirt, apply diluted technical fabric cleaner (not household detergent) with a soft brush
  4. Rinse completely — soap residue attracts dirt and degrades DWR coating
  5. Leave erected until completely dry — this can take 2–4 hours in good conditions

Never use bleach, household detergents or solvents on waterproof canopy fabric — they destroy the waterproof coating and fade the colour.

Cleaning the Frame

Wipe down aluminium or steel frame sections with a damp cloth. Apply silicone lubricant spray to the scissor joints and push-button height adjusters — this prevents corrosion and keeps the frame operating smoothly. Check for any bent frame sections or cracked welds before storage.

Proper Folding Technique

Collapse the canopy correctly — don't force it. Partially close the frame, then remove the roof panel. Fold the roof panel in thirds (never in half — creates a crease line that becomes a weak point). Collapse the frame fully and store with the roof panel on top (not compressed underneath the frame sections).

Long-Term Storage

  • Store in a cool, dry location — a garage shelf is better than a garden shed with temperature fluctuations
  • Keep off the ground — ground-level storage allows moisture in and vermin to nest
  • Do not store heavy items on top of the canopy bag — the frame sections can distort under pressure
  • Every 3–4 months: take the canopy out, unfold and allow to air for a day before repacking

Winter Storage Special Considerations

If storing for the winter: clean and dry as above, then apply UV and fabric protectant spray. For steel-frame canopies, wipe metal sections with a light oil (WD-40 or similar) before storage. Check in spring before first use of the season.

FAQ

How do I remove mould from a canopy that was packed wet?

Mix 1 part white vinegar with 3 parts water. Apply to mouldy areas with a sponge, leave 30 minutes, scrub gently and rinse. For heavy mould, use a proprietary canvas/tent mould remover product. After mould removal, reproof the affected areas — the treatment will have stripped the waterproof coating.
