Every year, utility workers and neighbours are injured or killed by generators connected incorrectly to home wiring. The solution — a transfer switch — is simple, inexpensive and legally required in most countries. Here's what you need to know.
Why You Can Never Just Plug Into a Socket
Plugging a generator into a household socket (the "suicide cord" method) feeds power backwards through your home's wiring and out onto the street grid. Utility workers repairing lines will encounter live current they can't see coming. This is illegal everywhere and has killed people.
Option 1 — Manual Transfer Switch (Recommended)
A manual transfer switch is a secondary panel installed next to your main consumer unit by a qualified electrician. It contains 6–12 circuit breakers for your most critical circuits: fridge, heating, lights, sockets.
When power cuts, you: (1) start the generator, (2) flip the transfer switch to "generator", (3) switch on only the circuits you need. Done.
Cost: €150–400 for the panel. €200–600 for installation depending on complexity.
Option 2 — Interlock Kit
An interlock kit prevents your main grid breaker and a generator input breaker from being on simultaneously. Cheaper than a full transfer switch (€50–150) but gives you access to your whole panel rather than just dedicated circuits.
Option 3 — Extension Cords (Safest for Occasional Use)
The simplest, safest approach for occasional use: run heavy-duty outdoor extension leads from the generator directly to the appliances you need. No wiring work required. Safe, legal, and works perfectly for most outage scenarios.
Generator Cord Gauges Matter
Use a minimum 12-gauge (2.5mm²) extension cord for any generator. For runs over 15 metres, use 10-gauge (4mm²) to avoid voltage drop. Undersized cords overheat and can start fires.

Any qualified electrician can install a transfer switch. You don't need a specialist. Show them the generator's output spec (voltage, Hz, phases) and they'll do the rest.
My generator has a 30A outlet — what cable do I need?
A 30A, L14-30 or equivalent twist-lock cable matches most 30A generator outlets. Make sure the other end matches your transfer switch input — your electrician will advise on compatibility.
