Forklift and Loading Platform Safety
Material handling equipment — forklifts, mobile platforms, loading lifts — accounts for a significant proportion of serious workplace injuries. Most are entirely preventable. Here are the rules that matter.
Pre-Operation Inspection
Before every shift:
- Check hydraulic system for leaks
- Inspect forks for cracks, bends or wear
- Test all controls including horn, lights and reverse alarm
- Check tyre condition and pressure
- Verify battery charge (electric models) or fuel level
Load Capacity and Centre of Gravity
Every forklift has a data plate showing rated capacity at a specific load centre (typically 500mm from the front of the forks). Exceeding this capacity at any load distance causes tip-over — the leading cause of forklift fatalities. Never exceed the plate rating.
Safe Operating Rules
- Travel with forks lowered (100–150mm above ground)
- Never carry passengers on forks or platform
- Sound horn at every blind corner
- Pedestrian exclusion zones must be enforced
- Never leave a running, unattended forklift with raised load
Training Requirements
In the EU, operators must hold a recognised certificate of competence. Training covers pre-use checks, load handling, stacking, refuelling and emergency procedures. Refresher training every 3–5 years is industry best practice.
FAQ
Can anyone operate a warehouse forklift?
No. EU regulations require specific training and certification. Employers who allow untrained operators face significant legal liability if accidents occur.
