Motorcycle Lift Stand Buying Guide

Motorcycle Lift Stand Buying Guide

Working on a motorcycle without a proper lift stand is frustrating and potentially dangerous. The right lift gets your bike stable, at the right height, so you can work comfortably on any component.

Types of Motorcycle Lifts

  • Paddock stands (front/rear): Simple, quick, inexpensive. Lifts one end at a time. Needs the correct spools or bobbins for your bike's swing arm.
  • Scissor lifts (hydraulic or mechanical): Lifts the entire bike. Best for full service work, tyre changes and chain adjustment. Capacities typically 400–680kg.
  • Centre stand: Built into the bike. Not present on all models. Not suitable for rear wheel removal.
  • Motorcycle bench (workshop table): Full workshop-grade lift table. For professional use. Very stable, but expensive and space-hungry.

Weight Capacity

Check your bike's kerb weight (including fluids) against the stand's rated capacity. A large touring bike or adventure bike can weigh 280–320kg. An adventure tourer with hard luggage may exceed 350kg. Always have 25–30% headroom.

Adapters and Compatibility

Rear paddock stands need specific spools or swing-arm adapters for your make and model. Universal adapter kits cover most Japanese, European and American bikes but verify compatibility before buying.

FAQ

Can I use a car floor jack to lift a motorcycle?

Only with a dedicated motorcycle saddle adapter that cradles the frame. Never position a jack saddle under exhaust pipes, fairings or engine casings — you risk serious damage. A purpose-built motorcycle lift is safer and easier.
