Petrol Engine Troubleshooting: Fix the 10 Most Common Problems

Small Petrol Engine Troubleshooting Guide

Problem 1: Engine Won't Start (No Fire)

Systematic check: fuel present → fuel fresh (under 60 days) → spark plug wire connected → spark plug sparks (remove, ground against engine, pull cord — blue-white spark is good; weak/no spark = replace plug) → air filter not clogged → choke closed for cold start → engine not hydrolocked (too much oil in cylinder from wrong tipping).

Problem 2: Engine Starts Then Dies

Almost certainly a fuel supply issue. Most common cause: carburettor needle valve stuck — old fuel left varnish on the needle seat. Clean carburettor thoroughly. Second common cause: fuel cap vent blocked — creates vacuum in tank that prevents fuel flow. Try loosening the fuel cap slightly while running.

Problem 3: Engine Runs Rough / Surges

Surging (RPM oscillating rhythmically): governor hunting (spring needs adjustment) or dirty carburettor main jet. Running rough constantly: partially blocked pilot/slow jet in carburettor, incorrect float height, air leak at carburettor gasket.

Problem 4: Black Smoke from Exhaust

Rich mixture — engine getting too much fuel or insufficient air. Check: air filter (clogged = insufficient air), choke stuck in closed position, float height too high (flooding carb), needle clip position (if adjustable).

Problem 5: Blue/White Oil Smoke

Oil burning. Check: oil overfilled (check level with dipstick — not above max), engine tilted at wrong angle allowing oil into combustion chamber, worn piston rings (compression test to confirm — below 90 PSI indicates worn rings), valve seals worn.

Problem 6: Engine Overheating

Check: cooling fins clogged with debris (clean with compressed air), insufficient oil (check level), incorrect oil grade, cooling shroud damaged or missing, engine running lean (insufficient fuel), under-spec engine for the load attached.

Problem 7: Engine Won't Reach Full Speed

Check: governor linkage binding or disconnected, throttle cable stretched or frayed, carburettor air/fuel jet partially blocked, air filter severely clogged, valve clearances out of spec (too tight, not opening fully).

Problem 8: Excessive Vibration

On equipment driven by the engine: check coupling alignment, check driven equipment for damage (bent pump shaft, unbalanced log splitter flywheel). On the engine itself: loose engine mounting bolts, bent crankshaft (check by removing coupling and measuring runout).

Problem 9: Recoil Pull Cord Very Hard or Won't Retract

Very hard to pull: engine hydrolocked — remove spark plug to release trapped fluid, then pull slowly. Pull cord won't retract: return spring broken or disengaged — usually requires recoil starter removal to inspect. Replaceable as a complete recoil starter assembly.

Problem 10: Electric Start Won't Crank

Check: battery charge (measure with voltmeter — below 11.5V under load = replace battery), battery terminals corroded (clean with wire brush), key switch or safety interlock switch faulty, starter motor brushes worn.
