Skid Steer Attachments Guide: Turning One Machine Into Many

Why Attachments Define the Value of a Skid Steer

A skid steer's value multiplies with each compatible attachment. The universal quick-attach system used by most major manufacturers allows changeovers in under 2 minutes. Instead of owning a grader, a trencher, a brush cutter and a sweeper separately, one skid steer with attachments replaces all four at far lower total cost.

Standard Bucket

The baseline attachment. Used for moving, loading and dumping loose material (soil, gravel, demolition debris, compost). Choose bucket capacity to match your machine's rated operating capacity — overfilling reduces stability and increases wear. Tooth bars and cutting edges are field-replaceable wear items.

Pallet Forks

Convert the skid steer into a forklift for moving palletised materials, timber, bagged goods and equipment. Look for: 1.2m minimum tine length, rated capacity to match your heaviest loads, adjustable tine spacing. One of the most-used attachments on any construction site.

Auger (Earth Drill)

Hydraulic-powered rotating auger bits for drilling holes in soil. Used for fence posts, tree planting, sign installation, and foundation piers. Bit diameters from 100mm to 900mm+. The machine's hydraulic flow rate determines drilling speed — check minimum GPM requirements against your machine's hydraulic output.

Brush Cutter / Mulcher

High-powered rotary drum with hardened teeth for cutting and mulching dense brush, saplings and light trees (up to 10–15 cm diameter). Used for land clearing, right-of-way maintenance, site preparation and fire break creation. Requires high hydraulic flow (typically 60–100 L/min) — not compatible with all skid steers.

Hydraulic Breaker

For breaking concrete, rock, asphalt and compacted fill. Impact rates of 400–1,200 blows per minute. Dramatically faster than a hand-held breaker for large areas. Check hydraulic pressure requirements — breakers typically need 180–250 bar operating pressure.

Snow Blade and Snow Blower

Snow plough blades (angled or straight) for clearing large paved areas. Snow blowers for heavy or compacted snow where a blade just pushes it sideways.

FAQ

Are all skid steer attachments interchangeable between brands?

Not perfectly — but the ISO/SAE universal quick attach standard means most attachments fit most machines. Always check: 1) Quick attach plate compatibility, 2) Hydraulic flow and pressure requirements vs your machine's output, 3) Attachment weight vs machine rated operating capacity.
